Governor Tim Walz has big plans for the upcoming year. During a recent conversation, Walz told former governor Jesse Ventura that he would like to legalize recreational cannabis use for adults over the age of 21 in early 2023.
“That was one of many reasons why I endorsed Gov. Walz,” Ventura told the Star Tribune.
“He would legalize cannabis, whereas Republicans are the ones stopping it.”
Throughout the year, Walz has made small strides toward the legalization of adult-use cannabis in Minnesota. Earlier this year, state legislators legalized THC in edible or drinkable form if it’s derived from hemp rather than full-strength marijuana. In March, the state’s medical program was expanded to allow smokeable cannabis. Most recently, the state commenced the sale of low-strength gummies and beverages.
“It just makes sense,” Walz said, according to the Associated Press.
“Prohibition didn’t work, we get better regulation, we know what’s in these things, it’s adult use, so I just mentioned that I think it would be important to recognize him, ask him if he would be there when we get this done.”
