2018 NBA Free Agency has not had nearly as many massive, surprising contracts dolled out as last year’s iteration. But there have been a few deals handed out met with frenzied reactions from NBA fans.
One such signing was that of Tim Hardaway, Jr. who agreed to a four-year, $71 million contract with the New York Knicks. Hardaway, a former member of the Knicks, was widely viewed as a player deserving of far less in his contract.
Apparently, fans were not the only ones surprised with the Hardaway offer sheet. According to Ian Begley of ESPN, even several members of the Knicks could not believe what had transpired:
Mills made the decision to sign Atlanta Hawks guard Tim Hardaway Jr. to a four-year, $71 million contract, a move that has been met with shock inside and outside the organization. The Knicks have become a perennial lottery team, rife with organizational discord and dysfunction.
The decision came as the Knicks still search for a President of Basketball Operations after firing Phil Jackson earlier this summer. Former Cavs’ GM David Griffin reportedly withdrew his name out of the consideration, partially because of Steve Mills’ role in the organization.
