Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is venturing deeper into the world of film and television. According to Brent Lang of Variety, Tesfaye is set to write, produce and star in and upcoming film. Details regarding the direction of the film remain under wraps, but it is under production in Los Angeles. Also, reports indicate that the film will feature Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye is also working on a new series with HBO. From the minds of Tesfaye and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, The Idol will follow the life of a modern-day cult leader and self-help guru who falls in love with an emerging pop star. Tesfaye is set to star in the series alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Troye Sivan. While the series does not yet have an exact release date, it is expected to debut sometime in 2023.
Alongside The Idol, The Weeknd also teamed up with HBO to release a live concert special.
“In front of an adoring sold-out crowd in Los Angeles, The Weeknd brings fans up-close with this intimate and epic special concert event,” the logline reads.
“Cinematically captured to bring viewers onstage and in the audience, The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium offers a front-row seat to the versatile artist’s thrilling 95-minute setlist – which includes such #1 hits as “Starboy,” “Blinding Lights,” “Can’t Feel My Face,” “I Feel It Coming,” and so much more.”
The special is currently available on HBO Max, but it is unclear when the world will learn more about The Weeknd’s new movie.
