With much success comes much drama, or at least I think that’s how the saying goes. Since the beginning of the year, The Weeknd has seen monumental success with the singles he has unleashed onto the radio. From Ariana Grande’s ‘Love Me Harder’ collaboration, to his ‘Earned It’ single that served as a central theme around the blockbuster hit, “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” success for the impending records from his latest album, Beauty Behind The Madness, was imminent. Topping the charts with dual singles, ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ and ‘The Hills,’ it now looks like The Weeknd could find himself in some legal trouble over copyright infringement. It is being reported that a music publishing company, Cutting Edge Music Services, has stated that The Weeknd’s number 1 hit, ‘The Hills,’ contains a sample of one of their records. According to the lawsuit filed, Abel’s ‘The Hills’ contains a sample from a Tom Raybould tune titled, ‘Revolution,’ which is also featured in a 2014 film, “The Machine.” The lawsuit also states that ‘The Hills’ producer, Million Dollar Mano, contacted Tom Raybould via “direct message” and informed him that he had sampled the track and it could potentially make it on to The Weeknd’s then unfinished Beauty Behind The Madness album. If that’s the case and the song was not properly sampled for legal purposes, due to the success of the single, this could cost The Weeknd’s label a pretty penny as the publishing company is looking to reap its proper share of money due to the song’s profits. Surely being nothing new within the music industry, we’ve recently found ourselves hearing about similar cases via Jay Z’s ‘Big Pimpin’ and Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines.’ As with everything else, we’ll see how this plays out. For now, The Weeknd isn’t slowing down his grind as he’s just released his brand new video for his latest single, ‘In The Night,’ which you can watch, here.
