The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t had the off season many people expected them to have. After missing out on the marquee free agents and losing their own Pau Gasol, they really haven’t made anything happen to improve the roster around Kobe Bryant besides getting the steal of the draft in Julius Randle. The Lakers finally made a signing that can also benefit Julius Randle and that player is Ed Davis. Ed Davis seemed like a up and coming power forward in this league when he was drafted by Toronto in 2010. Davis posted 7 PPG and 7 REB in his rookie season and once Bosh left The Raptors seemed confident Davis could step in and make and impact for the team. Davis never necessarily lived up to his potential in Toronto and after being the center piece in the Rudy Gay trade for Memphis things seemed to be looking up for him, but for whatever reason Davis’s minutes were cut pretty quickly in Memphis and never got going there.
Davis’ deal with The Lakers is a 2 year $2 million which is an absolute steal for that price tag, and worth the risk if there is any risk involved for The Lakers at this point. Now is the time for Davis to show these teams what he can do, because it could land him a pretty big contract when it’s all said and done whether it’s with The Lakers or another team. I fully believe Ed Davis can still develop into a productive starting Power Forward in this league, and I think this season he’s going to play a little Center for The Lakers behind Jordan Hill. With Hill, Davis, and Julius Randle side by side that could be an interesting rotation to watch play together. Davis has the ability to rebound and to score in the paint no problem it’s just a matter of getting him the consistent minutes which I can see him getting in Los Angeles, but the time is now for Davis to show what he’s made of.
