The Little Mermaid is heading to a streaming platform near you. The Halle Bailey-led adaptation will make its way to Disney+ on September 6, 2023.
“A young mermaid makes a deal with a sea witch to trade her beautiful voice for human legs so she can discover the world above water and impress a prince,” the synopsis of the Rob Marshall picture reads.
The latest adaptation of the iconic Disney production is led by Halle Bailey, the first Black woman to play the role in a live-action production of the film. Alongside Bailey, the film features Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik and Daveed Diggs. Directed by Rob Marshall, Bailey, McCarthy, Hauer-King and company were able to generate $154 million at the box office in their first weekend. As of August 2023, the film was able to generate more than $500 million worldwide at the box office. Furthermore, the picture also earned generally favorable reviews from critics.
“Overall, it’s a visually gorgeous film, buoyed by a strong ingenue in Bailey with enough laughs for the kids and the nostalgic adults,” Noëlle D. Lilley of Chicago Reader wrote.
“This is an absolutely delightful picture and is quite possibly my favorite of all the princess live-action remakes. Much of that is due to the powerful performance — and singing chops — of lead Halle Bailey as Ariel,” Erik Kain of Forbes added.
The film is currently available for digital purchase and will hit streaming in less than one month.
