Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowtizki has quietly become one of the NBA’s better personalities in the game today.
The 17 year veteran found the song “Mr. Jones” by the Counting Crows comforting while shooting free throws after a coach gave him this career altering advice:
Nowitzki: I got this coach of mine. And his idea one time when I missed a couple of pressure free throws, a while back. And he said, ‘I think you’re a little too tense, you’re trying to focus too much. Why don’t you try singing a song at the line? And I looked at him like he was out of his mind. Then I actually tried it sometimes and it worked.
Host: Is there one song that you probably sing more than any other song?
Nowitzki: You know I haven’t done it in a few years. That was more when I was a younger player. Counting Crows, Mr. Jones. I don’t know why that song but I love that song. I still love that song. That song always came in my mind.
One can only imagine how great this would sound if Nowitzki just happened to sing this out loud for all of us to hear. Well luckily for you he did just that on the Awesome Boring podcast with Adam McKay and Adam Davidson.
Dirk Nowitzki is no stranger to these performances after winning the NBA championship back in 2010-2011 he opted to celebrate with Queen’s “We Are The Champions”, but this one tops them all.
Dirk Nowitzki’s mic drop might look a little like this.
Who would’ve thought the Counting Crows were behind Dirk Nowitzki’s 88% career free throw percentage.
