Marvel’s really showing out at this year’s Comic-Con in a big way. Not only are they set to reveal the future of the MCU at their panel on Saturday, but they’re also showing off what could be the start of a Marvel Gaming Universe in Marvel’s Avengers.
At a Marvel Gaming Panel Thursday in San Diego, Creative Director at Crystal Dynamics and Marvel’s Avengers director Shaun Escayg showed off new gameplay for the game. Sadly, that footage has yet to be made public. But, based on descriptions, it’s a longer version of what was previously shown at E3.
The demo picks up on ‘A-Day,’ a celebration of the heroes in San Fransisco which is cut short by an attack on the Golden Gate Bridge. Escayg begins playing as Thor, mostly using his hammer and thunder abilities to cut through enemies. Control then swaps on the fly to Iron Man who uses a much more aerial-focused combat style. Flying up and down the bridge, Tony Stark uses rockets, bullets, and lasers to take out airborne threats to his comrades on the ground.
Then, control swaps the Hulk who uses brute force to take out the attackers. Hulk punches, ground pounds and smashes his way through countless grunts before control swaps again to Captain America. Cap’s fighting style is also wildly different from his fellow heroes. In a shield-centric scene, Cap takes out foes at a distance to clear out the helicarrier. After that, control shifts one last time to Black Widow.
The world’s most dangerous woman goes toe-to-toe with the Taskmaster, bringing him down and seemingly saving the day. However, that isn’t the case as the helicarrier explodes, killing Cap and countless others, framing the Avengers as mass murders. “This is just the set up for a much longer journey you’ll take,” Escayg said to close out the demo. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Marvel’s Avengers will then pick up a few years later as our heroes have splintered and mostly gone into exile. Check out the E3 trailer below:
