On January 7, 2023, Gervonta “Tank” Davis will return to Washington, D.C. and put his WBA “Regular” Lightweight Championship on the line against WBA Super Featherweight Champion Hector Garcia. If Davis emerges with the win, he will put himself in line to fight lightweight contender Ryan Garcia in April.
“He definitely wants the smoke,” Davis told Luke Thomas on Morning Kombat.
“I think it’s good for the sport. I think it’s definitely good for the sport because both of us are in our prime. He’s hungry. For sure, I’m hungry. There ain’t no other young fighters fighting each other right now. I feel like this is the start.”
After fighting both Ryan Garcia and Hector Garcia, Davis has two future opponents in mind, Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney.
“I think this is the start of the top 135 fighters fighting each other. This is the spark to it. Deals can be done,” he explained to Thomas on Morning Kombat.
In the event that he beats all four opponents, the Baltimore native may just retire. During his conversation with Thomas, he spoke openly about his desire to step away from the sport in the future.
“I think it’s opened up doors. I ain’t going to lie. I ain’t really trying to be in this too much longer. So that’s the answer right there for you,” he stated.
“Once I get them guys out of there, I’m gone.
Davis isn’t simply looking to step away from the sport and ride off into the sunset. He hopes to help other young fighters entering the business.
“I want to help people who are coming behind me. I feel that is more important,” he explained.
“It’s something that is instilled in me. It’s loyalty that people are missing out here. I feel if you’re in a position to help somebody, help them. For the right reasons.”
