WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis is scheduled to fight Héctor Garcia in January, but it appears there is a legal hurdle he must pass first. As previously reported, the Baltimore native was arrested in Parkland, Florida on December 27 and met with the following charges: battery-cause bodily harm-domestic violence. Authorities in Broward County held him at the area’s main bureau jail until he could attend a bond hearing at 8 a.m. on December 28. From there, bail was set at $1,000 and Davis was able to bond out shortly thereafter.
Davis, neither Premier Boxing Champions nor Showtime have commented on the matter. In contrast, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office has shared an incident report. According to the report, the Maryland native allegedly struck a woman across the right side of her head with a “closed hand type slap.” Mike Coppinger of ESPN reportedly followed up to clarify what a “closed hand type slap” is and authorities said that it is “a slap with a closed hand.” Ultimately, the woman reportedly suffered a small abrasion on the inside of her lip.
The WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion is also currently fighting a serious legal battle in his home state as well. In 2020, Davis was accused of fleeing the scene of a car crash that left four people, including a pregnant woman, injured. He is expected to appear in court on February 16 to face 14 charges that carry a combined potential sentence of seven years in jail.
One month before he is expected to appear in court regarding the November 2020 incident, Davis is scheduled to fight Hector Garcia in Washington, D.C. on January 7. However, it is unclear how the current charges levied against the champion boxer will impact the status of the bout.
