Just a few months ago, Jackson State was on its way to its first undefeated season in school history. Then, everything changed. Deion Sanders made the decision to leave the university for a position at Colorado. From there, a number of key players, including Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, left the program. Now, it appears that the team’s leading rusher from last season, Sy’veon Wilkerson, is no longer with the team.
Sy’veon Wilkerson led the Jackson State Tigers with 227 carries, 1,152 yards and nine touchdowns last season. However, his standing with the team came into question when he did not participate in spring practice.
“He’s still part of our team for now,” Jackson State Head Coach T.C. Taylor said at the time.
“Sy’Veon is trying to figure some things out right now. He’s a part of this team until he tells us he’s not. But he’s trying to figure some things out. We’ve got to focus on the guys that’s in here now.”
Weeks later, Taylor provided a more definitive answer after Wilkerson did not participate in the team’s spring game.
“Sy’veon Wilkerson is no longer a part of Jackson State right now,” Taylor stated.
Without Wilkerson, Taylor and the Jackson State Tigers will start the 2023-2024 season on the road against South Carolina State in August.
