Williams is entering his third year in the NBA, spending the previous two seasons with the Suns. The center has played limited minutes in his short NBA career, but has shown promising signs for his future.
Last year, in 47 games, Williams averaged 7.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, in 15.1 minutes of playing time.
Williams was a restricted free agent, so any outside offers he signed could have been matched by the Suns to keep him in Phoenix. Nevertheless, the team opted to re-sign him outright.
Re-signing Williams to a long-term deal begs the question of the Suns’ roster balance. The team has several big men in need of heavy minutes, including veteran Tyson Chandler and younger players like Alex Len, Dragan Bender, and Marquese Chriss. Williams’ return could be signaling the end of Chandler or Len in Phoenix.
It’s unclear if there are any options or non-guaranteed years on Williams’ new contract.
