Former Death Row boss Suge Knight hired a new lawyer in his criminal threat case stemming from an alleged criminal threat made to the director of the film ‘Straight Outta Compton.’
On Monday (Sep. 11), Knight hired criminal defense attorney Dominique E. Baños to replace Matthew Fletcher. Fletcher is also Knight’s defense attorney in Suge’s murder case, so this cleared up any possible conflict of interest.
Prosecutors say that they have evidence of possible witness tampering, bribery and obstruction of justice by Fletcher in the murder case. They filed a motion alleging that Knight, Fletcher, and others “were going to assist the defendant in procuring witnesses for his defense, which included payments for fabricated testimony.”
Obviously, Fletcher denied these allegations.
The D.A. declined to comment on if their office will pursue any charges for witness tampering, bribery, or obstruction of justice.
L.A. County Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon said that the issue of Fletcher’s potential conflict was now “moot.” He told prosecutors that they could re-file a motion if Fletcher tries to represent Knight again.
One of the prosecutors asked Judge Gordon if Baños had any ties to Fletcher. Baños responded, “I am not part of Mr. Fletcher’s firm.”
The former mogul is set to return to court on criminal threat charges October 3.
