Stuck for Father’s Day Ideas? These Tips Will Help You Pick the Perfect Gift

Father's Day
Karen Arnold

The presents we pick for other people to convey special messages say a lot about us. And with Father’s Day coming up, picking the right gift for that special dad in your life can feel like an impossible task. If you’re struggling to decide what kind of gift you want to give your father, here are a few tips to help you out.

Think About How Dad Spends His Free Time

If you’re searching for inspiration for your Father’s Day gift, think first about how your dad spends his free time. This can give you all kinds of ideas when it comes to choosing the perfect gift for him. Does he love watching documentaries about a specific time period? Is he a fishing expert? Is he an avid reader? These are the kinds of questions that should be at the forefront of your mind when you’re thinking about what kind of gift you want to give to your dad on his special day.

Fill a Need

Now that you have some of dad’s interests and hobbies in mind, you have a clearer path to your perfect Father’s Day gift. But beyond shopping for gifts based on his interests, think about what kinds of things he needs to pursue his interests to the fullest. If your dad is interested in fishing but he’s been complaining about his tackle box, it might be time to buy him a new one. Or say he loves writing letters by hand, but he can’t find any good paper at the local craft store. When almost 92 million metric tons of paper are produced in the U.S. alone, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to find some excellent paper for your dad online. Or maybe he needs a new pen or wants to start using a wax seal for his letters. Having a wax seal custom-made with your family’s crest or your dad’s initials on it is a small, yet meaningful gift that fulfills his interests and fills a need in his life.

Don’t Make it About the Gift

Buying your dad a gift just for the sake of having something to give him on Father’s Day isn’t worth the trouble you’ll probably go through. If you’re really stuck for ideas, just do something you know your dad loves. Maybe there’s a recipe you developed that he just can’t get enough of. Make a big batch and bring it over to him on Father’s Day! The key here is to remember that Father’s Day isn’t about how many extravagant gifts you can give as a child to your father. It’s about celebrating the memories you’ve made with your dad and looking forward to the future when you can make even more. When you think about all that, it becomes much simpler to think about what you’re going to do for your dad on Father’s Day.

When in Doubt, Get Sentimental

Sentimental gifts are great for Father’s Day. Since this day is all about celebrating dads and the memories we’ve made with them, displaying a bit of sentimentality in your gifts is an awesome way to go. If you have a bunch of old photos laying around your house from your childhood, consider compiling them into a giant photo album to give to your dad. Maybe you have a few photos of your parents’ old house that you thought you’d lost. Considering that almost 20% of the population moves every year, it’s not a far-fetched notion. Or if you and your siblings all live close to your parents, consider having professional photos taken and gifted to your dad. You could even recreate some old childhood photos to give your gift a really nostalgic and sentimental vibe.

Getting the perfect gift for your dad on Father’s Day doesn’t have to be an impossible challenge. When you keep these tips in mind, you’re sure to pick the perfect gift for your dad.
