The Manhattan Jaspers have parted ways with Head Coach Steve Masiello just two weeks before the season is set to begin. He was entering the final year of his contract and was said to have a “shaky” relationship with the program’s Atheltic Director Marianne Reilly. The program was expected to compete near the top of the MAAC this season and have MAAC preseason player of the year, Jose Perez, on their roster. Perez said he and most of the team will enter the transfer portal despite the season beginning in two weeks.
So Manhattan, who was No. 2 in the MAAC preseason poll and has the conference preseason player of the year in Jose Perez, parts ways with Steve Masiello less than two weeks before the season starts.
That is wild. I feel bad for the players.

Jose Perez, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, tells me he will enter the Transfer Portal and that many or all of his teammates will as well.
“I think everyone.”

This is near an unprecedented moment in college basketball history. Steve Masiello and from what it sounds like most of the roster are gone. It is unclear how the team will begin the season in two weeks if things stand how they are currently. Assuming the team takes the court, RaShawn Stores will serve as the program’s interim Head Coach. The Manhattan Jaspers are set to begin their season on November seventh against the VCU Rams. Def Pen Sports will update this story if more is learned and if the team makes a decision about their roster heading into the season.
