The Golden State Warriors have lost another assistant coach, further proving that if you’re at the top, everybody else wants what you have and because it’s too expensive to get the head coach, they go for the next best thing. The assistant coach.
You know what’s fascinating about all this? Steve Kerr has had this job for two years and he already has a coaching tree. Amazing that is, but also risky. The Pelicans have Alvin Gentry but regressed this season, hopefully Luke Walton won’t have that problem but if that doesn’t pan out we just have to realise that only the Warriors can do what they’re doing.
But that’s just me being mildly pessimistic. Luke Walton got the Lakers job, Steve Kerr is happy for him and so are we.
Q: Did the Luke Walton hiring happen pretty fast yesterday? A little surprising?
-KERR: Yeah, shocked me.
And Luke called me maybe around 4 o’clock 4 or so, he said, ‘I’ve got good news and bad news.’ I said, ‘What’s the
good news?’ He said, ‘The Lakers offered me the job.’ I said, ‘Well, what’s the bad news?’ He said, ‘I took it!’‘I said you’re right, that is bad news. We’re going to miss you.’ [Laughs.] I said that’s right, that is bad news. We’re going to miss you.
When we put our staff together last year, I kind of figured Alvin would be gone pretty quickly. I didn’t think Luke would be gone this fast.
So “disappointed” is not the right word, because I’m thrilled for him. Sad is probably the more appropriate term. He’s a huge part of our culture and so much fun to be around.
He’s going to be fantastic. It was just a matter of time until he was a head coach. Just happened quicker than we expected.
They’ve lost an assistant coach every year, now obviously Luke Walton will be with the Warriors until the end of the season so it would be very cool if Walton left on the same note as Alvin Gentry had.
