The Detroit Pistons are making moves that are realistic and helps them in the long term as well as short term. That is what should be done.
Judging by the fairly underwhelming trade window, it is clear that the summer of free agency will be one of the most active that we have seen in years. Teams didn’t do much in the trade deadline partly because most of the people on the trading block are going to be free agents in the upcoming summer. So why trade for them?
Detroit were smart enough to realise that they’re not going to be the most popular destination when free agency comes, so that’s why they went for Tobias Harris and attempted to plug as many holes, so they don’t need to live in the free agency market and risk leaving with nobody signed.
“There wasn’t a doubt in anybody’s mind on our staff that this was a better player on a better contract than anybody we’d be able to get this coming summer with what’s coming up,” Van Gundy said of Harris, the former first-round pick who’d just signed a four-year, $64 million extension in Orlando last July.
“You’ve got to know who you are. We’re not at the position yet that with 30 teams having money that we’re gonna be at the top of everybody’s list that’s on the free-agent market. So to be able to get good young players who are locked in is the ideal for us.”
The Pistons are good for the future, their core players are young and have the potential to do something great. Tobias Harris has already shined for the Pistons and should continue to do so. Thinking about it, they’re ahead of most teams even though they’re borderline Playoff teams at the moment.
