Spotify has announced the acquisition of its latest platform, Podz. The streaming giant plans to use Podz to help users discover new podcasts across the app.
“At Spotify, we are investing to build and scale the world’s best (and most personalized) podcast discovery experience,” the company stated.
“We believe that Podz’ technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate growth of the category worldwide.”
Spotify will not simply use Podz to recommend the names of podcasts related to the ones that users already listen to. Instead, Spotify will likely present users with an “audio newsfeed” that presents users with 60-second clips of new and exciting podcasts. Users can flip through these short previews like songs until they find new podcasts that they enjoy.
Podz is Spotify’s latest foray into podcasting. The streaming giant has already acquired networks like Gimlet and The Ringer while partnering with massively successful shows like The Joe Rogan Show. Acquiring podcasts will simply add to their toolbelt as they seek to become the world’s leading home for podcasts.
