Spencer Dinwiddie put his name on a national stage almost one year ago at the 2018 NBA Skills Competition in Los Angeles. The Brooklyn Nets guard beat out fellow talented players and some All-Stars to win the competition and take the trophy back home to Brooklyn. But almost one year later, his defense of that trophy is in major doubt and the Nets might be without a major part of their team going into the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Spencer Dinwiddie will reportedly undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. He’s expected to miss 3-6 weeks which does cover the All-Star break.
Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie will undergo surgery Monday to repair torn ligaments in his right thumb, league sources told ESPN on Saturday.
Dinwiddie, engaged in a career season for the surging Nets, is expected to miss three to six weeks, league sources told ESPN.
He met with two New York-based hand specialists late this week and both recommended the surgical option, sources said.
Dinwiddie signed a three-year, $34.5 million extension back in December but the guard’s play dropped off a bit and was inconsistent as of late, presumably due to his injury.
The Colorado product is posting 17.2 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.5 blocks in 28.6 minutes per game. He ranks second among league reserves in points per game, which is also his career-high, and assists per game.
The Nets are already without possibly their best player in Caris LeVert after he suffered a scary looking leg injury but his return is expected to come before the season ends. Without Dinwiddie, all eyes will now be on D’Angelo Russell who is starting to show why he was the second overall pick back in 2016. The Nets have six games before the trade deadline on February 7th and nine games before the All-Star break.
