Apparently, Marvel’s return to San Diego Comic-Con this year has more than a few studios taking their ball and going home. I don’t know if that’s the real reason studios are opting out of this year’s convention or not but, according to Deadline, you can officially add Sony to that growing list, which also includes Warner Bros. and Universal.
This move seems strange considering Sony has a number of films landing before the end of the year that could really benefit from some extra ‘Con Buzz. Namely, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. They’ve also got Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot and Zombieland 2 landing in theaters before the end of the year. But, it seems like the studio is just letting the promo teams for those two films handle that themselves over the next few months.
Last year, Sony hosted panels for both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse along with a strong presence on the show floor but they’ve opted out of that this year. My guess is that even though they could show some of their coming Marvel projects (like Morbius and Venom 2), there’s just too little to show and make an impact this year. In my mind, its another trend Marvel started that other studios are just trying to imitate in hopes of driving interest in their properties. But, hopefully, this year will be the only one where so many studios drop out. Here’s to Marvel’s panel though should be a doozy.
