Skye Nicolson finds herself in the winner’s circle yet again. On Saturday, November 25, Nicolson left the comforts of Australia and traveled to the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland for a showdown with Lucy Wildheart for the interim WBC Featherweight Championship.
In spite of Wildheart’s awkward style, Nicolson was able to control much of the fight with her educated footwork and solid, straight shots. The Australian’s consistent, percise game plan was enough to bludgeon Wildheart’s nose and pave the way for a one-sided ninth round in which Wildheart’s corner threw in the towel.
Nicolson has already made it clear that she has no interest in returning to the amateur ranks and pushing for an Olympic medal in Paris, France this summer. Instead, her ability to successfully grab an interim title paves the way for her to challenge the division’s top fighter — Amanda Serrano.
Serrano has her sights set on a rematch with Katie Taylor in the future. However, Taylor has a stiff test in front of her with Chantelle Cameron coming to Dublin later today. If Taylor wins, Nicolson may be sidelined in favor of a Taylor-Serrano rematch. If Taylor loses, Nicolson will run side by side with Alycia Baumgardner as they push for a shot at Serrano.
