If you thought it was a fluke, you’re sadly mistaken.
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, box office insiders shared a bit of good news for Ryan Coogler and Warner Bros. In its second weekend, Sinners earned a whopping $45 million at the box office, declined a mere 6% domestically from opening weekend. Thus far, the original film from the Bay Area native and his Newark-born creative partner has earned $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million globally.
Sinners has not only earned the support of moviegoers globally, but it has also received rave reviews from critics. As of the morning of April 28, 2025, the film has earned a 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Every year we beg for more original movies to save us from the graveyard of reboots, sequels and regurgitated content that’s being shoved down our throats. Sinners is the answer to that prayer, the salvation to our starved movie souls,” Natasha Alvar of The Fiction Department wrote.
“Sinners exists in the horror space but isn’t really a horror movie. It’s more than that. It’s an unflinching look at Jim Crow era politics, the power of the blues and identity politics. But when it goes horror it goes hard. Bravo for an original story,” Shawn Edwards of FOX 4 Kansas City wrote.
