Showtime is reportedly developing a prequel series that is inspired by Tyler Perry’s infamous character, Madea. The series tentatively called Mabel and it will explore the life of Madea as a young, Black woman living in Atlanta in the 1970s.
Perry will work alongside film executive and photographer Tim Palen to executive produce the film. JaNeika James and JaSheika James have been attached to the series as writers. The two writers have spent their time in Hollywood working on a number of popular television series like Empire, Revenge, Desperate Houswives and Lady Justice.
This is the second project that Perry has been tied to this week. The film mogul also appeared alongside Angelina Jolie in the Those Who Wish Me Dead trailer. The New Line Cinema picture is set to debut on HBO Max in May.
At this time, details regarding the Mabel project are sparse. It is unclear who will star in the series and when it will premiere.
