New Line Cinema apparently wants to Set It Off again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has tapped Issa Rae to help develop a reimagining of the 1996 action classic.
The Insecure star is set to produce under her Issa Rae Productions banner alongside Montrel McKay, her longtime producing partner. Rae is also expected to star in the film. Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster are attached to write the film’s script. Singleton recently worked on Showtime’s Black Monday while Gloster is best known for her work on the Fox’s Star, which ended earlier this year.
The original Set It Off starred Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise. In the film, four friends become fed-up with the institutions in place to hold them down and take matters into their own hands by going on a bank-robbing spree. However, despite at first hitting it big, things turn bad quickly and ending in tragedy. Directed by Friday director F. Gary Gray, the film was a surprise hit with audiences and critics alike. Not only did it help springboard Latifah and Smith’s careers but it also helped illuminate socio-economic issues faced by many Americans.
Rae’s career has been on a rocketship recently. Earlier this year she starred in the good-not-great Little as the stand-out performer. She also created and stars in HBO’s celebrated Insecure, which is set to air its fourth season later this year. Most recently though, she helped create and appeared in HBO’s summer hit, A Black Lady Sketch Show.
New Line’s Set It Off is in early development so, no release date has been announced yet.
