The Washington Wizards have been surging recently and are going to get a big dose of reinforcements soon. According to head coach Scott Brooks, center Ian Mahinmi could make his return on Wednesday.
From Candace Buckner of the Washington Post:
Brooks indicated that the decision to clear Mahinmi for game action has not fully been made, but the possibility exists that he might play limited minutes this week, including against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night.
“There is a chance,” Brooks said.
Mahinmi has played in only one game since signing with the Wizards over the summer. He made his season debut in late November before hitting the sidelines again with knee soreness and receiving platelet-rich plasma treatment.
Mahinmi could provide a huge boost to the Wizards whose main concern is the lack of depth. The team’s starting unit has been phenomenal, leading the way to their 30-21 record (8-2 in their last 10). But the bench has been sub-par. Mahinmi provides a defensive rim-protector as well as a pick-and-roll threat on the other end.
Obviously, Ian Mahinmi still has to prove he can remain healthy. But if he does, he is a huge (both literally and figuratively) addition to the Wizards as they attempt to make a playoff run.
