Sarah Paulson won’t be making the trip back to 1984. According to Variety, the actress won’t be appearing in the upcoming ninth season of American Horror Story, titled AHS: 1984. Paulson has appeared in a starring role in each of the previous eight seasons.
AHS: 1984 seems to be somewhat of a reinvention for the long-running series. Though I guess each season is kind of a reinvention for the anthology series but, there were stories being developed across multiple seasons. However, after the events of season eight, Apocalypse, many of those story threads were wrapped up. Not much is known about the plot or characters but creator Ryan Murphy has teased an 80’s slasher movie vibe for AHS: 1984. And the short teaser we got earlier this year certainly reflects that.

Paulson’s departure isn’t the only shake-up in the cast though as another longtime star, Evan Peters, is also stepping away for season nine. However, Murphy has confirmed the return of Emma Roberts, who appeared in seasons 3, 4, and 8. So, at least AHS fans are getting a little bit of a trade-off.
Recently, Paulson has been filming Mrs. America, a series about the Equal Rights Amendment, for FX. She is also set to work with Ryan Murphy again soon on Netflix’s Ratched, an origin series for the titular Nurse Ratched from the classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
AHS: 1984 is set to premiere on FX later this year on September 18th.
