The San Diego Chargers had a horrific season despite having a franchise quarterback in the fold with Philip Rivers. The Chargers biggest offseason acquisition was former Packer cornerback Casey Hayward. Outside of the the Chargers will feature largely the same roster from a year ago. Can we expect different results in 2016?
3 Position Battles To Watch:
- Center: Matt Slauson vs. Max Tuerk
The days of Nick Hardwick are long gone. Slauson is the veteran who has played for the Jets and Bears in the past. Tuerk is the rookie from USC who will take over when he is ready.
2. Outside Linebacker: Jeremiah Attaochu vs. Joey Bosa
Attoaochu is a former 2nd round pick in 2014 who showed great promise a year ago. The Nigerian native got 6 sacks a year ago. Bosa was drafted 3rd overall in the draft and is expected to play, he just may not start right away especially since he is still unsigned.
3. Wide Receiver: Travis Benjamin vs. Stevie Johnson vs. Dontrelle Inman
Travis Benjamin was brought over in the offseason to add some much needed receiver depth. Johnson an Inman will likely be the secondary targets with Keenan Allen starting on the opposite side.
Ready To Breakout: Melvin Gordon
Gordon was down right horrible a year ago after being selected in the first round. Part of the reason is the Chargers were simply never competitive. Entering year two expect Gordon to get more opportunities. (This was not an easy one to pick, San Diego’s roster is horrifying).
Fantasy Sleeper: Hunter Henry
Antonio Gates mine as well be a fossil and is destined to break down eventually. Henry was drafted in the second round this year as a pass catching tight end from Arkansas. If Gates breaks down, Henry could be a nice option.
Rookie To Watch: Joey Bosa
I have been on record multiple times saying I believe Bosa will turn out to be a bust. Bosa’s job got even harder when he was selected by the Chargers as he now has to move from 4-3 defensive end to 3-4 outside linebacker. For more on Bosa click here.
The Chargers will likely sit at the bottom of the AFC West. Their roster is terrible. It’s time to wonder if Mike McCoy is on the hot seat.
