The Spurs followed up their gigantic signing of LaMarcus Aldridge in nothing short of brilliant fashion. Free agent forward David West, who was being linked to the Wizards, Warriors, Clippers and Cavaliers, has agreed to a deal with San Antonio.
First reported by Turner Sports’ David Aldridge via Twitter:
Free agent forward David West has agreed to terms with the Spurs, per league sources.
The deal with West is for the league veteran minimum, per source.
David West walked from $12M for $1.4M and a chance at a ring. Everybody’s not in this just for the money.
At 35, West was adamant about wanting to play for a contender after opting out of his final year with the Pacers. He now has that chance with the San Antonio Spurs with a revamped front line featuring LaMarcus Aldridge.
The Spurs made this a wickedly successful free agency. They basically replaced Aron Baynes and Tiago Splitter with LaMarcus Aldridge and David West, which are instant and significant talent upgrades. West is in the waning years of his career, as is Tim Duncan, so Aldridge is the primary focus, but when you have the experience and skill sets of Duncan and West to blend with Aldridge in the Spurs system, things look interesting.
David West is the proverbial cherry-on-top for the Spurs’ offseason.
