
Retirements this late in the NFL offseason doesn’t happen often, but sometimes NFL players decide to hang up their cleats in May. Longtime NFL and Baltimore Ravens punter Sam Koch has announced his retirement from professional football. He spent all 16 seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens. Koch was the longest-tenured player in the franchise’s history and played in 256 games for the team.
Ravens punter Sam Koch announced his retirement on Thursday, which ends the career of the longest-tenured player in team history.
Koch, who is 39, has played in more games for the Ravens (256) than Terrell Suggs (229) and Ray Lewis (228).

In his long career with the Baltimore Ravens, Sam Koch punted the ball 1,168 times for 52,868 yards with an average punt of 45.3 yards in his career. He was a one-time Pro Bowl member and was the starting punter on the Ravens’ win in Super Bowl XLVII. In his career, he also completed seven of his eight passing attempts for 82 yards. He also rushed the ball seven times for ten yards and one touchdown. Koch was a beloved member of the Ravens and will one day likely be inducted into the team’s ring of honor.

The Baltimore Ravens selected Koch in the 6th round of the 2006 NFL Draft with the 203rd overall pick. It was singled earlier this year that Koch may be ready to retire this year at 39 years old when the team drafted a punter in the 2022 NFL Draft.
