As free agency begins to wind down with a few notable names yet to find an NBA team for next season, some are deciding to take their playing career overseas. The latest to follow such path is forward Sam Dekker who played 47 games for the Washington Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers last season.
According to Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia, Dekker will sign a deal with Lokomotiv Kuban, a powerhouse in Russian professional basketball.
Sam Dekker is finalizing an agreement with Russian powerhouse Lokomotiv Kuban, a source told me and @AlessandroMagg4.
Only a few details are left before the deal becomes official— Emiliano Carchia (@Carchia) August 3, 2019
Sam Dekker is only the latest NBA player deciding to head overseas, and his decision comes just days after it was announced former Laker Lance Stephenson would play in China next season.
Though Dekker has been a serviceable bench piece through his four years in the league, he never quite lived up to expectations when he was drafted 18th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2015. Houston would trade him away after just two seasons and he has since bounced from the Clippers to the Cavs and then to the Wizards at the end of last season.
Dekker is a capable shooter and many thought he would be one of the better stretch forwards in the NBA. However, that never quite panned out and now the 25-year-old Wisconsin product will head to Russia. Dekker averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season with the Cavs and Wizards.
