The New Orleans Saints transformation continues to take shape. The Saints have traded veteran guard Ben Grubbs to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 5th round draft pick. The order of the pick has yet to be released due to the impacting compensatory picks. Comp picks are given to teams who lost key free agents from the 2014 season. Grubbs is a two time pro bowler who will make a big impact in the Chiefs running game.
The Chiefs needed an offensive line upgrade due to the foregone Rodney Hudson who has departed for Oakland. Kansas City will now look for a center to work along side the all pro guard Grubbs. The Chiefs also inherited the remaining two years of the deal via the trade. Kansas City holds the 18th pick in the NFL draft with needs in the secondary.
The Saints on the other hand appear to be in full rebuilding mode. Tight end Jimmy Graham has already been sent to Seattle in a shocking trade. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler had more to add in regards to the Saints trade block.
“They are shopping everyone,” a source told ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler. “Literally everyone.” The source said quarterback “Drew Brees and wide receiver Brandin Cooks are the only names he hasn’t heard discussed”.
In the end this may be the best course of action the for Saints. If the team truly believed they could not win a Superbowl with the current pieces in tact, maybe it was best to blow up the roster. The team could desperately use those picks to improve upon the 31st ranked defense from last season.
