You’re probably doing something right if you reportedly have cosigns from a litany of superstars, including Jack Harlow, Justin Bieber, and Doechii. Late last year, SAILORR broke onto the scene with her hit single, “Pookie’s Requiem,” only to follow it up with a remix featuring Summer Walker. With her momentum building, the Jacksonville, Florida native returned this week with a new single called “Down Bad.”
The smoothness of SAILORR’s voice, paired with the calming production offered by Adam Krevlin and Zach Ezzy offsets the messiness of the song’s message. The singer hailing from the Sunshine State finds herself longing for a soulmate, but tends to find herself fielding late-night calls from desperate exes who have no intention of staying for the long haul and men who disappear before the sun rises. Still, she puts up with it in hopes it’ll turn into something more significant. In the messiness of emotion and yearning for something more, the one beautiful part of “Down Bad” is SAILORR’s consistent optimism about finding love in the future.
“I want something that can last/Oh, tattoos matching/Make me snort while I’m laughing/Put me on your lap while we in the backseat/Black truck over to the place that we eat,” she sings as the track comes to a close.
If Leon Thomas’s “Mutt” is the anthem of the last few months, “Down Bad” is the woman telling Thomas, “Take your time. What’s the rush?” But until SAILORR can find a man who isn’t acting like a dog or a mutt, there will likely be more “Down Bad” adjacent songs in the future. Given how good the single sounds, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Check it out below.
