Peja Stojakovic is one of the best players in Sacramento Kings’ history, and he may not be done with the team just yet, reports Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee.
“I asked him to join me, and in September, we’ll probably know,” [Sacramento Kings’ Vice-President Vlade] Divac said.
Stojakovic has been an adviser to Divac this offseason, when the Kings made sweeping roster changes after a 29-53 season. Stojakovic also traveled with the team to observe the Las Vegas summer league.
If Stojakovic accepts Divac’s offer, he would have to move back to the United States from Europe, where he has lived since retiring from the NBA after winning a championship with Dallas in 2011.
“He has family over there, so he has to make a decision,” Divac said.
The Kings aren’t going through the easiest offseason. They were left without a GM just two weeks before the Draft, as Pete D’Alessandro skipped town for a front office job with the Denver Nuggets.
Wes Matthews and Monta Ellis both turned down the Kings’ offers to take less money elsewhere, and there has been an unreasonable amount of drama between head coach George Karl and All-Star Center DeMarcus Cousins.
Divac and Stojakovic go way back. The two played together for years; in Sacramento and on the Serbian National Team. Because of their relationship, and Stojakovic’s long-standing affiliation with the franchise, news of a job offer isn’t exactly surprising. Now all that’s left is to wait for Peja’s response.
