On Friday, May 2, 2025, Ring Magazine attempted to pull off the unthinkable. The hollowed boxing-centric public held a boxing card filled with current and former champions in Times Square as fans passed by and the sport’s biggest stars watched from a VIP area. Not to mention, DAZN and Ring Magazine pulled legendary broadcaster Jim Lampley out of retirement to provide commentary for the fight. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. The setup was not what many fans expected, as the ring was surrounded by barriers, and fans struggled to see all of the action. Furthermore, those watching from home were frustrated as many of the fights failed to live up to the hype, including Devin Haney’s lopsided decision win against Jose Ramirez. But above all else, the shock of the night came as Rolando “Rolly” Romero bested Ryan Garcia in what appeared to be a lopsided decision win in which Romero dropped Garcia. Now, less than six months removed from the event, Garcia is reportedly looking to run things back with Romero.
“That just wasn’t me that night,” Garcia told The Ring. “I had hand problems on both of my hands, coming off a one-year layoff, and a weird training camp, training just four weeks with Derrick James, and fighting in front of a small crowd.”
Romero has not yet responded to Garcia’s comments. In fact, he has not publicly offered any details about when or where the fight would take place. Over the last few weeks, the current WBA welterweight titleholder has also been tied to rumors of a potential fight with Manny Pacquiao. Regardless, Garcia appears determined to fight Romero for the world title once more and “sink him in deep waters.”
“Rolly doesn’t take pressure and punches really well,” Garcia said. “He doesn’t like fighting on the inside. You saw what happened to him against Isaac Cruz. A healthy version of me knocks out Rolly. It’s simple.”
