As the ball drops in Times Square, New York will formally introduce its 110th mayor. The city of New York has announced that Eric Adams will be formally sworn in as mayor during a closed celebration in Times Square shortly after millions welcome the new year.
“Times Square has long been synonymous with the New Year — a place of excitement, renewal, and hope for the future,” Adams shared in a press statement, according to Gothamist.
“These are the same themes that animated my campaign and will inform my mayoralty, as I prepare to lead the city out of this challenging period.”
Adams was originally scheduled to be sworn in as mayor at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre next month. However, his plans were thwarted when the world experienced a rise in the number of new COVID-19 cases.
“I don’t need an inauguration. I’m going to speak with Brad and Jumaane and say it’s best for us to forego an inauguration because we don’t want to put our people in a dangerous situation,” Adams said during a press conference on Tuesday.
Adams will reportedly be supported by his family at this event and he will be sworn in using his family’s Bible. A maximum of 15,000 fully vaccinated. spectators will be able to take part in the event.
