For several decades, Robin Roberts has seamlessly transitioned from role to role in the wide world of mass media. Along her journey from ESPN to ABC and beyond, she landed her most significant role yet — co-anchor of Good Morning America. Sitting in the chair since 2005, she has covered everything from natural disasters to the Super Bowl. With that said, her career path has not always been smooth. During a recent interview with Jamie Kern Lima, she opened up about the tough decision to speak openly about her sexuality on Good Morning America.
“It’s not the Robin Roberts Show, it’s Good Morning America. And there are so many people whose livelihoods depend on the success of our show. And so, if I do something that hurts the show, that hurts them,” she explained.
“I would walk down the street with [my spouse,] Amber [Laign], and if somebody saw us, I would introduce her. I wasn’t trying to hide but yet, I wasn’t ready to, to fully…And part of it is, and I’ve never said this before, part of it is because of my Christianity.”
Roberts was afraid that people may not fully accept her sexual identity and her religion simultaneously. She said. “I was afraid that people, they think you can’t be gay and a Christian.” However, the reception was overwhelmingly positive.
“I was afraid that people, they think you can’t be gay and a Christian. And I am. I am and I was so fearful that I would be shunned,” she continued.
“I received a letter, a beautiful letter from the National Office at the Presbyterian Church after I announced about Amber, fully supportive, fully supportive, and then I think about all those years I wasted, worried, needless worry.”
