Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is reportedly showing signs of “gradual improvement” after being shot five times on May 15, 2024 at approximately 2:30 p.m.
“Based on the examination results, today’s medical board meeting confirmed the gradual improvement of the Prime Minister’s health condition,” a statement from F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital reads.
The shooter, identified as Juraj C., was taken into custody immediately after the shooting and charged with the attempted assassination. Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok says the suspect told police the attack was politically motivated.
“The reasons (the suspect gave) were the decision to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, the decision to stop supplying military assistance to Ukraine, the reform of public service broadcaster and the dismissal of the judicial council head,” Eštok said.
This is Fico’s third stint as prime minister, having previously filled the role from 2006-2010 and 2012-2018. However, his third term has been met with extreme divsion as supporters see the longtime politician attempting to lead the country to prosperity. Meanwhile, critics raise issue with the country’s decision to eliminate its military support for Kyiv and block Ukraine’s NATO ambitions.
