Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to part ways with the Democratic Party and run for President as an Independent. The announcement, which his campaign describes as historic, is expected to be made on Monday, October 9, 2023.
Kennedy Jr.’s is reportedly “mutual, though hardly amicable.” Last month, a poll from Quinnipiac University found that 48% of Republicans have favorable views of the presidential candidate while only 14% of Democrats feel similarly.
“He is taking a dive among Democrats,” polling analyst Tim Malloy told NBC News.
“A lot of Americans would entertain somebody from another party, and he’s pretty popular with a lot of Republicans.”
Leading up to his expected departure from the Democratic Party, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that he could find great success as an Independent. In a hypothetical three-way matchup, Kennedy Jr. garnered support from 14% of voters while Biden received 31% of votes and Trump secured 33% of votes.
If Kennedy Jr. does depart from the Democratic Party, President Joe Biden would likely run unopposed during primary season. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson began the election run as the other two Democratic candidates of note.
