Richard Jefferson has done a lot in the world of basketball. He’s played for a National Championship at the University of Arizona, won an NBA Championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers and worked for ESPN as an NBA Analyst. Now, he’ll try his hand at officiating.
On Monday afternoon, the NBA announced that Jefferson had attended daily NBA Summer League Officiating Meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hours later, he plans to officiate the second quarter of a game featuring the New York Knicks and Portland Trailblazers. Afterward, he will join the ESPN broadcast team to discuss his experience as a referee.
“Why [would I] do this? [First, I have got a] tremendous amount of knowledge about our game. I’ve learned [a lot by] sitting in classes with the best refs in the world. [Second], I [want to] do this because not many people would dare put themselves in this position. The more info I have, the more informed I am as a broadcaster,” he tweeted.
Monday’s matchup between the New York Knicks and Portland Trailblazers is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN.
