I don’t think I need to lie when it comes to Katy Perry. I’ve never been a big fan of her work, I mean, yeah I enjoyed “Hot N Cold” because yep, you guys sometimes “PMS like a bitch”! But I don’t want to start talking about that now so back to Katy. She’s just been another pop singer without outstanding qualities to me. Well, it’s not that she’s become the next Mariah Carey but I feel as if Katy took the right steps to climb up the ledder of success. Her hits “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” and the buzz surrounding her made me check her album out. In addition, the music scene is extremely dry right now so I’m pretty much craving for decent music…
Teenage Dream
I think everyone is going to agree with me that the second single off the same-titled album is just too cute. “Teenage Dream” was actually the reason why I decided to give the LP a listen.
Last Friday Night (TGIF)
Absolutely my favorite song! Especially the first verse makes me imagine the messed-up setting and hook is…well off the hook I guess…”Pictures of last night ended up online/I’m screwed/Oh well/It’s a blacked out blur/But I’m pretty sure it ruled”. Definitely a next single contender!
California Gurls
I think there’s not much to say about the summer anthem and reply to Jay-Z’s “Empire State Of Mind” featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg. “Now put your hands up oho oho!”
Firework
I feel like this song is everybody’s favorite and I can see why. However, Katy’s strained vocals during the chorus make me like this song less.
Peacock
Fun song. Nothing more, nothing less.
Circle The Drain
In “Circle The Drain” Katy Perry reveals her edgy side talking about her ex Travie McCoy and I definitely like it.
The One That Got Away
I kind of think that “The One That Got Away” is similar to “Teenage Dream” with the difference that she’s talking about a lost love this time. I love this time.
E.T.
I wouldn’t have thought that I’d say this but I love “E.T.”. I feel like the song has this powerful chorus (“Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me/Infect me with your love and/Fill me with your poison”) which makes the song outstanding.
Who Am I Living For
In my opinion “Who Am I Living For” is one of the weakest songs on the album.
Pearl
Although “Pearl” is a beautiful song I can’t help it and always think of “Dance In The Dark” by Lady Gaga when hearing the track…
Hummingway Heartbeat
Just like the title says this song contains “the story of the birds and the bees” and like the this certain song I find the song rather boring…
Not Like The Movies
The ballad “Not Like The Movies” is definitely a good choice to end the album. Nice song but not one of my faves.
I’m pleasantly surprised with this musical effort. Katy Perry definitely gave us a solid album. It won’t get classified as a classic but right now it is absolutely okay to listen to it.
The only real problem I have with the album is Katy Perry’s limited, sometimes uncontrolled voice which I already mentioned when talking about “Firework”. And yes, I often cringe when I watch her perform live.
Nevertheless, if you don’t hate pop music you’ll be entertained for a while with “Teenage Dream”.
