With Zion Williamson seemingly locked in as the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft, all indications point towards Murray State’s Ja Morant being the second name to come off the board.
Morant is reportedly the Memphis Grizzlies’ target with the no. 2 pick and he’s expected to be one of the league’s next best point guards. However, Morant has an injury hurdle he must first get over before any of this comes to fruition. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Morant will undergo a minor knee procedure that will sideline him for 3-4 weeks.
Murray State guard Ja Morant — the projected No. 2 pick in this month’s NBA draft — will undergo a minor arthroscopic procedure on his right knee Monday, league sources told ESPN.
Morant is expected to be fully recovered in three to four weeks, sources said.
The scope is designed to remove a loose body in his knee, sources said.
Though knee injuries are often troublesome and concerning, Morant will be undergoing a scope procedure which isn’t as invasive as most other joint operations. Morant’s 3-4 week return timetable means he should be nearing full health once the draft commences on June 20.
Hopefully for Ja Morant, this early knee ailment isn’t a sign of things to come in his NBA career. Morant is a complete and well-rounded offensive threat who uses not only his excellent shooting stroke but also his elite athleticism to attack opposing defenses. Despite the upcoming knee surgery, Morant appears to be the Grizzlies’ pick at second overall and will be expected to fill some big shoes if Mike Conley is dealt as expected.
