The Cleveland Cavaliers have made a decision in their coaching search by going with David Blatt as their guy. The Cavs’ final decision came down to the approval of Cavs Owner Dan Gilbert to go ahead and hire David Blatt according to Fox Sports Ohio writer Sam Amico. Blatt was expected to make the NBA jump once he resigned from his head coaching position overseas. Blatt’s true desire was to coach in the NBA and he met with Cleveland on Wednesday, and he had interest to become an assistant coach for The Golden State Warriors for newly hired Head Coach Steve Kerr.
Blatt is taking over a Cavaliers team who has the number one pick in next week’s draft and a team that has some young talent to build around. The Cavaliers last year had locker room issues and had plenty of other issues. I think a lot of those issues came down to being poorly coached, and what The Cavaliers need is a system in place and a strong leader which Blatt could be just that guy to do so. With such a young roster I think its priority number one to get a winning culture and attitude in this organization. With Blatt having a history of winning, albeit was overseas winning is winning and Blatt seems to welcome the challenge of taking the next step.
A lot of people around the league are raving about this hire by The Cavaliers. Blatt should have no problem making the jump to the NBA with all the experience he’s had coaching. Blatt’s greatest strength is putting a system in that works around his player’s strengths, and he connects with his players well. Former NBA player talked about Blatt who he played for overseas two times, and talked about how Blatt was his favorite coach to play for in his career. Parker also stated that Blatt is one of the top basketball coaches in the world.
Blatt’s deal is 3 years with a 4th year team option which could be worth as much as $20 million. Blatt has proven that he can win overseas, but can he make the jump to The NBA? If The Cavaliers have a big offseason and get Blatt some more talent I see big things for The Cavaliers in the near future.
