In the year of 2015, we are privileged to still have some of the heavy-hitters from the 90’s still continuously working and bettering their craft. Among some of these artists is R. Kelly who has spawned hit after hit after launching onto the scene in 1993 with his debut album, 12 Play. Since then, the singer and songwriter has birthed a vast collection of classics and throughout the years, R. Kelly hasn’t missed a beat. Now, in 2015, Mr. Kelly is gearing up for the release of his 13th solo studio album, Buffet, and the singer spoke about the writing process for the album and what fans should expect.
“I’ve done 462 songs for this particular album,” he says. “They’re not ideas, they are whole full songs. I wanted to be sure that I really nailed it to the point that when I started breaking it down to the 14, 15, 16 songs that go on the album that I had more than enough to choose from, and they would all be great choices.”
Buffet has no such underlying idea. “I’ve always wanted to display my talents and show everybody just what I can do musically,” Kelly says. “I’ve always wanted to do different types of music and different characters, and this album gave me the chance to do that. I absolutely think that the audience is expecting the sexual R. Kelly, the steppin’ R. Kelly, maybe a bit of the ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ R. Kelly. They’ve been spoiled for twenty-something years. I don’t want fans mad at me, so I gotta give them what they expect and what they want.”
Over 20 years later and it seems that R. Kelly is still as hungry as he was when he first started. Slated to release later this year, there’s no doubt that the ‘When A Woman’s Fed Up’ singer will deliver another great body of work.
