From the moment Head Coach Stan Van Gundy was hired in Detroit he was asked about the future of Detroit’s restricted free agent Power Forward Greg Monroe. Stan Van Gundy saw Monroe as a key piece to what they want to do on the court, and he hasn’t changed his opinion on him. He went into the importance of Monroe after Detroit’s 80-78 win against the Rockets on Wednesday.
“He’s not locked in and he’s a very important free agent to us,” Van Gundy said. “So yeah, he’s restricted, but he has options. Look, he’s more important than anybody else on the free-agent market to us, to the Detroit Pistons, and I wanted to be in there first, and talking to him and everything else.”
It’s good Detroit has remained in what seems to be constant contact with Monroe, and they do want him back. A big part of recruiting Monroe back to Detroit is Center Andre Drummond who said he will do whatever it takes to get Monroe to re sign with The Pistons. We haven’t seen any action or contract details between the two, but it’s no surprise until the bigger free agent dominoes fall mainly Chris Bosh.
Monroe looks like he’s staying put as of now, but we all know how free agency can make an unexpected turn. Monroe’s best option though has to be to stay put in Detroit.
