The Phoenix Suns have signed guard Deonte Burton to a non-guaranteed contract according to Eric Pincus. Burton has previously bounced around the summer league and training camp rosters of the Wizards and Kings and he played professionally in Germany last year. The deal is likely just a training camp invite, but Burton will certainly have a chance to make the team’s regular season roster.
Burton is a 24 year old combo guard from Nevada. He is too small to consistently defend NBA shooting guards, but he is not the playmaker that one would expect from a point guard. Additionally, in his four years of college ball, he was unable to show consistency in his shooting ability although some of that was due to poor shot selection which arose from playing with mostly sub-par talent.
Burton’s one elite skill is his boundless athleticism. He showed that throughout his college career. However, if he wants to actually play in the NBA, he will have to improve on a multitude of parts to his game.
One thing is for sure; it would be awfully fun to see this in the NBA:
On your family.
