In a world where appearance and consistency dominate, artists have to remain on top of their game. Especially if you’re an artist that doesn’t bode the body of work as Jay Z, Kanye West, Pharrell, and a ridiculous amount of rock groups. Music will always stand the test of time, as long as it’s quality.
Where does Teyana Taylor stack up?
For the young Harlemite, she doesn’t have much room for long musical pauses as she may think. When Taylor isn’t in the studio she’s flicking up in asstastic thong bikinis for Instagram, tweeting, subsequently losing an Adidas sponsorship due to a thumb-thugging war with Rihanna, and attending industry events across the nation. She has done everything musicians do, except put out music. Prior to releasing “Sorry,” the singer’s last song was “Make You Move” back in August of 2012.
Remember “Google Me”? Yeah, that was back in 2008.
Teyana Taylor isn’t a slouch be any means, it just seems that she has all the talent in the world to become a legit superstar in the entertainment industry: she dances (very, very well), acts, and sings. Similarly, Taylor likens to Jay Electronica, they both have this mystic about them; they’re the smart kids in that back of the class acting a fool with the underachievers. Moreover, getting them to release music on a consistent basis, even if it’s a song a week, is like pulling teeth.
Considering the two-year gap in between tracks, the 23-year-old songstress is 2-for-2. “Sorry” is a very introspective ballad that touches on past relationships. It shows a level of growth from the artist when most would think she’d put out some poppy-club track with the sole purpose to gain YouTube views, radio play, and DJ spins. Taylor made the song for her and she is inviting listeners into her soul.
Will this version of Teyana Taylor be a mainstay? Or will she vanish into thin air leaving fans wanting more. Furthermore, taking the risk of losing them due to her disappearing acts.
The Phantom of Teyana remains until further notice.
