For years, tech insiders have indicate that the PC market may be dead. While that may be true, it’s not going into its grave quietly. Reports from market research firms, IDC and Gartner, both indicate that PC sales are on the rise for the first time in six years. During the second quarter of 2018, IDC is reporting that PC sales have grown at a 2.7% increase and Gartner is reporting that the increase was slightly lower at 1.4%. This report becomes even more interesting when readers realize that this data doesn’t even include more high tech products like the Surface Pro. In fact, a good portion of this increase is the result of Windows PCs and Macs. Another significant reason for the rise in the PC market is the rise of the Windows 10 business market.
When asked about the growth of the PC market, Mikako Kitagawa of Gartner said, “PC shipment growth in the second quarter of 2018 was driven by demand in the business market, which was offset by declining shipments in the consumer segment.” Jay Chou of IDC also added, “Although traditional PCs may not be the default device for many usage scenarios, the market continues to show pockets of resiliency as PC usage experience evolves and improves.” However, Kitagawa did mention that the recent success of PCs would be short lived. He said, “In the business segment, PC momentum will weaken in two years when the replacement peak for Windows 10 passes.”
Only time will tell if Kitagawa will be right about the business segment. For the time being, PC loyalists can rejoice and revel in this recent victory.
