Tonight, the biggest stars in Hollywood will gather at the Dolby Theater as Jimmy Kimmel hosts the 95th Academy Awards. Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal will compete for the “Best Actor” award while Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All At Once battle for “Best Picture” honors. Within the “Best Director” race, Ruben Östlund, Steven Spielberg, Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are all vying for the award. As the time comes to award this year’s winner, director Patty Jenkins has raised an issue with the category — no woman have been nominated this year.
“I give up, I give up,” Jenkins told Marc Malkin of Variety.
“I say that even with all of their push to have diversity. The numbers are just hugely imbalanced of who votes for these things. I sort of just stopped paying attention to it. It’s still going to take a long ways to go. It’s going to take a lot more to really see truly more diverse awards. I really appreciate the efforts that they’re making but we have a long way to go.”
Jenkins is not the only director to raise an issue with the lack of women included in the category. Nomadland Director Chloe Zhao said there was a huge gender gap within the director sector of the industry.
“There’s clearly a very big gap for women filmmakers in our industry,” Zhao told Variety.
The 95th Academy Awards are set to take place tonight at the Dolby Theater in California at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
