Apple is reportedly working on a documentary that will honor the life and career of Sidney Poitier.
Developed by Harpo Productions and Network Entertainment, the film will be led by director Reggie Hudlin. Previously, Hudlin worked on a number of iconic films including Boomerang and House Party. More recently, he’s worked on Tracy Morgan’s The Last O.G. series, Black Monday on Showtime and The Black Godfather documentary about Clarence Avant.
Joining Hudlin, Oprah Winfrey will serve as the executive producer. While Winfrey is best known for interviewing skills, business acumen and acting, she also has a strong executive producing resume. Over the years, she has produced Greenleaf, Queen Sugar, Selma and Precious.
The center of the documentary, Sidney Poitier, recently passed away at 94. His death was confirmed by Fred Mitchell, the Bahamas’ minister of foreign affairs, earlier this week.
“To us Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist and a man of incredible grace and moral fortitude, he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and adoring father and a man who always put family first,” Poitier’s family shared in a statement, according to Variety.
“Although he is no longer here with us in this realm, his beautiful soul will continue to guide and inspire us. He will live on in us, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren — in every belly laugh, every curious inquiry, every act of compassion and kindness. His legacy will live on in the world, continuing to inspire not only with his incredible body of work, but even more so with his humanity.”
