Could the Oakland Raiders be playoff bound in 2016? The Raiders may be the most improved team in football cashing in on multiple free agent signings along with the development of their incumbent players. What can we expect from Oakland as they attempt to return to glory in 2016?
3 Position Battles To Watch:
- Backup Quarterback: Connor Cook vs. Matt McGloin
The Raiders obviously value McGloin very highly after tendering him with at 2nd round tender. Cook meanwhile is the Raiders 4th round pick who slipped in the draft. If starter Derek Carr misses any action it remains to be seen who the Raiders will go with.
2. Right Tackle: Austin Howard vs. Menelik Watson
The Raiders have one of the best offensive lines in football. The addition of Kelechi Osemele at guard only solidifies that statement. Oakland does have a battle at right tackle however. Watson didn’t play in 2015 but I expect him to regain his starting job making Howard available in case of injury.
3. Defensive Tackle: ???
The Raiders have a ton of linebacker and defensive end depth but very little defensive tackle depth. Dan Williams and Justin Ellis are the presumed starters with rookie Darius Latham getting a crack as well. It will be more interesting to see who Oakland decides to line up in the sub packages along the defensive line deploying a lot of those undersized pass rushers. Is there anyone who isn’t terrified of Khalil Mack?
Ready To Breakout: Amari Cooper
Cooper was a can’t miss prospect in 2015 and is one of the many great youngsters on the Raider roster. Expect his 2015 season of over 1,000 yards and 6 touchdowns to increase from his rookie campaign.
Fantasy Sleeper: DeAndre Washington
Derek Carr, Michael Crabtree, and Latavius Murray should all have good fantasy seasons for the Silver and Black. One guy who could make an impact is rookie tailback DeAndre Washington. The former Texas Tech back could wind up being the change of pace back with a boatload of receiving targets.
Rookie To Watch: Karl Joseph
Joseph was one of the most impactful players in college football before tearing his ACL. Now in Oakland he joins a secondary that will feature Reggie Nelson, David Amerson, and Sean Smith. Oakland selected Joseph in the first round with the idea that he could be the next Earl Thomas.
